What then-current car did you lust after in high school?

I’m old. 150 years ago, in the early nineties, I was in high school. We may not have had the Internet, but there was a brief time when there were lots and LOTS of FWD and AWD sport coupes about. (I didn’t really pay attention to the RWD pony cars or anything else until later in life.) They may not have been blessed with earth-shattering hp or torque, but the sheer number of them were gratifying.

Kinja'd!!!

Among the coupes available was the VW Corrado. I always liked the Scirocco, and the Corrado carried on the basic shape of the Scirocco that I loved and eventually came with the exotic-sounding VR6. I really liked them, especially in green. It’s one of the cars that would grab my attention immediately if I was anywhere near one, yet I’ve never even considered trying to own one. For some reason, I lack the typical car-guy need to possess the cars I lust after. Not only that, I can handle beige like no other; witness my current Kia Optima and my long history of sensible sedans. But there are times that I’ve wanted to buck my tendencies and grab a car like a Corrado.

So, what was it that made your tongue hang out while trying to get through your formative years?

The Corrado was definitely up there, but for me, there was only one:

A black RX-7.

I thought the Camaro was the thing to have. We would walk the Chevy lot sometimes and gaze lovingly into the window and imagine being able to afford one someday. This was the early 80s.

An embryonic sliver of class lurking in my soul held the C2 Corvette on a pedestal, but I never thought I'd get to own one, and I had no opportunity to see one in person. I also loved the RX-7.

My friend’s mom had a purple one, with the BBS wheels. First time I ever rode in a car during the snow, and it handled it like a beast(even with my friend who had his license for a week driving). Between that and a guy in my town’s FJ60(It’s perfection), I’ve loved Toyota’s ever since.

Oddly I wasn’t too interested in current cars in HS, mid-90s... I had no hope of having my own car, so I just enjoyed our Ford Contour as much as I could. I found up-market sports cars to be pretentious. Probably a Fox body LX coupe would have been a dream car if I’d thought much about it.

I was actually more aware of car models before HS, around 1989-1991, but I had very pedestrian taste. Many of my favorites are late 80s: AW11, Fox body, Accord/Prelude of the time, E30.

I too was in high school in the early 90s. I didn’t really lust after too many new or newish cars of the day. I had my 81 Corolla wagon. I was good to go. I’d take a CRX, though. My little sister got one a few years after I was done with school. The Oppo runs strong in our family (bonus: her husband drives for the Aqua Volvo LeMons squad).

13 years after graduating, I ended up with its predecessor, an F355 Berlinetta. It fits the childhood dream better, since it was produced in my most impressionable years.

They are similar enough in performance that I’m not sure I would ever move to a 360, which is arguably a superior car in every technical aspect.

I miss my wagon so much i’m planning on buying another one, hopefully this year. When I was in high school, things were just weird with cars. The late 80s/early 90s were just horrible. I really dug on the NSX, but everything else that I was exposed to was just crap. The post-Fox body Mustang that all the rich kids got. The Lasers, Probes, Cavilers, Cabrios... The lowered bass trucks with tiny wheels were big for a year, then Billy Ray Cyrus hit the scene and all those kids got big muddin’ trucks. Saturns happened. My weirdo and punk friends were relegated to a tiny parking lot, that was 100 yard or more from the school. We had wagons from Honda, Subaru, Toyota. There were old Chevys, beater boats from the 70s. Life was good in that parking lot. The cars were sweet and people awesome. Everything else in high school sucked.
